General Introduction

Network and Multimedia Institute, Institute for Information Industry (NMI/III) is engaged in the research of advanced and key ICT technology to help Taiwan local manufacturers develop high-quality ICT products and applications. We hope that it can assist Taiwan IT Industry to promote IT business. Based on embedded system, network communication, and multimedia technologies, NMI/III is trying to integrate heterogeneous networks and our focus is to provide intelligent services in a mobile and ubiquitous computing environment.


NMI/III owns core wire/wireless technology, mobile multimedia technology, handset technology, sensor network deployment technology, and other IT technologies. We hope that together with cross-domain knowledge, the integration of our technologies and digital products/application services can create industry benefits.

1. WiMAX Technology : According to 802.16e and 802.16j specifications, NMI/III is developing WiMAX base station MAC protocols, wireless access testing, IOT compatibility testing, wireless resource management, network management, and IP multimedia application technologies. Besides the technology development, NMI is joining the WiMAX standard group and we hope we can incorporate our research result into WiMAX standards.


2. WSN Technology : According to ZigBee (802.15.4) specification, NMI developed wireless sensor network protocol, power-saving and security software, and application development/deployment tools. Together with multiple positioning and sensor technology, the WSN technology can promote human-centric mobile intelligent services.


3. 3G Handset communication Technology : According 3GPP (R4 FDD) specification, NMI developed WCDMA L2/L3 protocols, including access stratum and non-access stratum. The WCDMA L2/L3 protocols, which can be applied to WCDMA handset, passed commercial testing equipment and they are the only 3G(R4) communication protocol software system solely developed by Taiwanese engineers.


4. Mobile Multimedia Technology : NMI's multimedia software, which can be applied to PDAs and cellular phones, includes multimedia libraries (H.264 and AAC+decoder), 3D man-machine interface (Open GL and JSR 184), SIP-based IMS client API (JSR-281IMS Service API), dual-network group audio/video communication software, and so on.


5. Information Security Technology : NMI's security diagnosis tool can detect and find out network weakness and potential threats automatically. Programmers can develop USIM cellular phone high-security applications using our software with ease.

In order to serve global customers, NMI/III expands its scale to increase its R&D power and productivity in the recent years.


1. NMI is engaged in the R&D of network communication, environment sensing, mobile multimedia, ...key technologies. Together with cross-domain knowledge, we upgrade the IT business and products and create new IT business and services.


2. NMI is engaged in innovative projects to promote technology innovation and pilot systems.


3. NMI promotes international cooperation and joins international standard enactment groups to create new business opportunities.

Our Future Hope
The trend of information and communication technology will move our society towards a ubiquitous networking environment. It means everyone can enjoy using personal applications and services in a ubiquitous networking environment through different kinds of communication devices. Now the information and communication industry is facing a new phase and the rapid acquisition of necessary technology become a key factor for success. Because most businesses in Taiwan are of small to medium scale and many of them can’t afford to develop the technology by themselves, we hope that they can get their needed technology from III and gain advantage in the worldwide market.
