Real Case : NMNS ZigBee Positioning Guiding System
 
The National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS), one of three most heavily attended museums in Taiwan (other two are located in Taipei and Kaohsiung respectively), is to collect and preserve Taiwan’s biological diversity to enhance public knowledge of natural science and related subjects and to promote a museum of the first class.


Over 30 permanent exhibit areas cover subjects on astronomy, space science, paleontology, ecology, gems and minerals, Taiwanese Aborigines, and tropical plants. The Museum is a major science learning center with three million visitors in decades.
The audio guiding service is currently available to the visitors, but it can only provide limited information of the exhibition. To improve the service quality, NMNS cooperated with III WSN team. The result of this cooperation is the NMNS ZigBee Positioning Guiding System. This system is the biggest guiding system based on ZigBee technology. It adopts ZigBee technology to build the wireless mobile guiding system, which covers more than 6,000 square meters in the NMNS exhibition hall area.

Visitors who wish to use this service shall apply for a special device at the visitor information center. This special device is composed of a badge and a PDA. Visitors carrying the badge will interact with the Positioning Guiding System. Their location can be tracked by the Visitors Location Server. With the positioning information, corresponding multimedia data will be chosen among all the text, audio and video of the exhibit content within the Digital Content System, and these multimedia data will then be pushed to the visitors' PDAs. This location-based guiding system also provides extra services such as :

  • Route planning : visitors can choose a favorite visiting path to avoid crowded rooms, or to strengthen learning experience based on the themes.
  • Reservation service : visitors who had reserved the show in the Space IMAX Theater shall receive a notice when the opening time is approaching.
  • Group service : this service is designed for visitors in a group; with this service, visitors can track location of other members in the group.

Besides providing guiding service, the system also provides :

  • Suggestions to current visiting paths:system can provide the exhibit area visiting suggestions to prevent crowded exhibit areas as well as to enhance visiting experience.
  • Reminding service:for visitors who have reserved the show in Space IMAX Theater, the system will remind them before opening.
  • Friendship Community Service:visitors can set up their own friendship group so that they can know others' current locations
The NMNS ZigBee Positioning Guiding System is the first achievement of III in the field of ubiquitous society. With rich expertise in WSN construction and deployment, III can provide more fruitful WSN applications, and to satisfy our customers' needs.
